French Breakfast Puffs

French Breakfast Puffs are a Sweet Family tradition.  Scott has enjoyed these since he was younger and I was introduced to them shortly after I married Scott.  They are a treat!  Baked instead of fried, they taste a bit like a butter glazed donut with sugar and cinnamon.  Serve for brunch or have as an afternoon treat.  Makes about 15 puffs.  Enjoy!

French Breakfast Puffs

2/3 cup shortening (I used butter instead)

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

3 cups flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 cup milk

After baking:

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons cinnamon

1 cup butter

Heat oven to 350 degrees.  Grease 15 medium muffin cups.  Mix thoroughly butter, 1 cup sugar, and the two eggs.  Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg alternately with milk.

Fill muffin tins 2/3 full.  Bake 20 or 25 minutes.

Mix 1 cup sugar and cinnamon.  Immediately after baking, roll puffs in melted butter, then in cinnamon-sugar mixture.  Serve.

Sweet Notes:  These freeze well.
